There are some absolutely ADORABLE easy chapter books that have been published in the last couple of years. I grew up reading the Polk Street School books and while those did the job, I would have easily given up my Peaches and Cream Barbie for some of these lovely picks.
Am I dating myself? Well then, for fans of Junie B. Jones and Katie Woo, these are some stellar alternatives!
1. Heidi Heckelbeck – is a super sweet 8-year-old witch. In the first book, Heidi starts second grade at Brewster Elementary school and has to figure out life as a somewhat extraordinary schoolgirl. The text is easy peasy lemon squeezy as you can see below. Illustrations? ON POINT!
2. Critter Club – Looking for some animal friendly fare? Not ready for Warriors, Vet Volunteers, or Shelter Pet Squad yet? This EASILY ACCESSIBLE series follows Amy and her friends as they solve cuddly mysteries and have furry adventures with all sorts of…well…CRITTERS! Pigs, horses, puppies…
3. Sophie Mouse – Squee! Just when you think characters couldn’t get any cuter: Sophie! This little rodent and her animal friends (YES, there’s a hedgehog!) solve little rodent problems, forge forest friendships (I teach, I have alliterative license) and skip along on seasonal adventures.
4. Kylie Jean – Are you looking for a book series to follow along with a hobby, class, or activity? Kylie Jean does it! Singing lessons? Check! Drama Club? Check! Summer Camp? Check? Bakin… you get the picture. There’s something for all of the scheduled littles here.
I’ll post a few for the puppy dogs’ tails soon…
